With the help of my far more experienced editors, I wrote SPIN’s story on Tom Gabel/Laura Jane Grace’s big announcement (via Rolling Stone). And I couldn’t be prouder to say that I did.

…and she is totally going by “Laura”! Love it! Im so happy for her, she is so brave! Ive loved Against Me! since I was 15, and ironically, I was introduced to them by some of the most anti-woman men I’ve ever met. This is going to bring out the bigot in a lot of people, but her decision is  going to open up so many minds and blow away so many stereotypes!

“For me, the most terrifying thing about this was how [my wife]  would accept the news,” Tom Gabel Laura Grace told Rolling Stone. “But she’s been super-amazing and understanding.”

“I’m going to have embarrassing moments, and that won’t be fun,” the Against Me! star went on to say of coming out in the public eye, notably as the first rock star to do so. “But that’s part of what talking to you is about — is hoping people will understand, and hoping they’ll be fairly kind.”
